It’s blues and gospel and rock and bluegrass and folk and country and hillbilly and you mix that all up and you play it with joy and reckless abandon: that’s The Billyhawks.

It starts with Tim Martin’s Macon, Georgia, Southern rock/blues roots on acoustic lead guitar. Stir in some soulful songwriting by Jonathan Lee Pickens, with his years of Nashville experience including playing on the Grand Ole Opry. Add a touch of bluesy bluegrass mandolin from Don Grieser’s upbringing in Indiana. Tie it all together in a deep groove of the blues/funk bass of New Mexico native Johnny Gallegos and the solid drumming of Walker Lee Pickens.

It’s tough finding musicians to play with in the wide open spaces of New Mexico. It’s a miracle that these five found each other, and once they did, they knew they had something special right from the start.
